Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/21/2017
Originally competing in the Western Hockey League, the Phoenix Roadrunners eventually joined the renegade World Hockey Association for the 1974-75 season with most of their WHL roster intact. Defenseman Mike Stevens came over from the WHL Denver Spurs to join the Roadrunners, who enjoyed a measure of success in their inaugural WHA season by making the playoffs, only to lose to the Quebec Nordiques in the quarterfinals. This first-year Roadrunners mesh jersey with a Champion size 46 in the back of the neck and nine team repairs on the sleeves was worn by Stevens, as evidenced by the 1974-75 team picture, which shows him wearing #3 in the third row, first from the left.
Stevens only played for the Roadrunners in 1974-75. His game-worn jersey features an embroidered Roadrunners crest sewn on the front, while the numbers on the back and both sleeves, the white stripe around the waist and Roadrunners crest on the shoulders are rubberized. There are seven team repairs on the left sleeve and two more on the right sleeve. The heat-screened vinyl has held up very well with some loss to the white vinyl stripe around the waist, mostly on the front tail. There is evidence of a removed nameplate.
