Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/21/2017
Century old hockey photographs featuring lone individuals are rare, with images representing important early HOFers and teams virtually non-existent. We have such a relic, with a gorgeous sepia-toned photo of original Montreal Canadiens superstar Didier Pitre. Born in Valleyfield, Pitre was the first player signed by Jack Laviolette when the Canadiens were formed in 1909 and was the idol of French-Canadian hockey followers. Originally a defenceman, Pitre later played right wing on a line with Laviolette and Newsy Lalonde and helped the Habs to their first Stanley Cup in 1915-16. At 7 ½” x 9 ½”, Pitre is pictured focusing his attention on his stick, with presumably the Westmount Arena as backdrop. The circa-1916 image remains fairly clean, begging to be set in an attractive frame.
A few small blemishes and scuffs are present, with a small tear along the right hand side as well as edge wear. There is also an ink notation on the reverse of “Didier Pitre Canadian 1916”.
