Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/8/2017
The first MLB team in Canada, the Montreal Expos began life in 1969 in a city familiar with important baseball occurrences, including witnessing Jackie Robinson making his professional minor league debut with the Montreal Royals. From the personal collection of Paul Gauvreau who was an assistant trainer with the Expos in 1980, we have a great group of Expos items, including a circa-1980 game-used batting helmet attributed to Larry Parrish, circa-1980 game-used pants attributed to Scott Sanderson, a pair of right-handed Expos batting gloves and 9 bats, including examples used by Larry Parrish (2), Tom Hutton, Boots Day, Rodney Scott, Andre Dawson, Warren Cromartie and Mookie Wilson.
The complete breakdown for the available items in this lot is as follows. 1) Game-used Expos batting helmet attributed to Larry Parrish. An ABC model size 7 ¼, the helmet has been crudely painted with a Montreal colour theme, with an Expos decal along the front. “15” also appears on the reverse, placed over previous decals, with “15” again handwritten along the interior, with “17” written on the sizing sticker. Heavy use is exhibited on the head gear, with a large crack that travels up the back that has been reinforced along the interior with clear tape, along with remnants of the former styrofoam padding. 2) Game-worn Expos pants attributed to Scott Sanderson. Rawlings models, a date and size swatch of “21 33 26 80” sits along the waistband, along with a “Set 1 1980” tag. The pants show nice use, with light staining on the lower legs along with a repair patch just below the left knee. 3) Andre Dawson bat. A 35 ½” Louisville R43 signature model, the blonde bat features perfect stampings, with “10” handwritten on the knob. In gorgeous condition, it exhibits little-to-no wear, so we are listing it as an issued bat, not game-used. 4) Warren Cromartie game-used bat. A 34” Adirondack Big Stick from the 1971-79 labeling period, the bat features nice stampings, with a flared handle along with the model “257B” stamped onto the knob. Light game-use is exhibited, with no cracks or chips. 5) Tom Hutton game-used bat. A 34 ½” Louisville S226 signature model with cork grip, the bat features a beautiful center brand, with “14” handwritten on the knob. Wear is exhibited along the barrel, with the bat remaining in excellent condition. 6) Boots Day game-used bat. A 34 ½” Adirondack Big Stick from the 1971-79 labeling period, the bat features nice stampings, with a flared handle along with the model “129B” stamped onto the knob. Great use is exhibited including some dead wood on the backside of the barrel, along with a couple cracks, with a fairly large v-shaped example mid-way up the handle. 7) Mookie Wilson game-used and signed bat. A 34” Cooper Pro 100 CMW3 model, “3” is handwritten on the knob, along with tape at the beginning of the handle. Nice use is exhibited, with Wilson adding a blue marker signature between his name and the center brand, and the signature displays well. 8) Rodney Scott game-used bat. A 35” Louisville R161 signature model from the 1980-2012 labeling period, the bat features a cork grip along with “3” handwritten on the knob. Great use is exhibited on the bat, and it remains in very good condition with some dead wood along the backside of the barrel. 9 & 10) Larry Parrish game-used bats. A pair of identical 35” Louisville B205 signature models, each bat features good center brand stampings, along with “15” handwritten along the knob of each. Just light use is shown, with the bats remaining in excellent condition. 11) “Expos” bat. A 35” Louisville K100 model, “Expos” appears in place instead of a signature, with the bat featuring perfect stampings. Possibly some type of index bat or an example made to be signed, the exceptionally light bat with unfinished handle has an “F” handwritten in red marker along the top of the barrel. 12 & 13) Batting gloves. Both made for the right hand, we have a pair of batting gloves, one a Zett model the other featuring just an Expos emblem, with both showing nice use including a large tear to the palm of the “Expos” example. 14) Bat bag. Possibly originating with the Expos, we have a solid blue bat bag that shows tons of use, with heavy wear to the bottom along with the leather strapping along the top. We should also note that the possibility exists that a few of the game-used bats may have been used with clubs other than the Expos.
