Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2018

These four vintage Marty Schmidt masks are very well made and we are certain if the Edmonton-based goalie mask maker had resided in a larger urban center during the 1970s you would have seen many more pro netminders wearing his work. Schmidt made and played with three of these masks, including his cream Liut-style mask from 1979, and another identical mask with red and yellow striping worn in 1980. Schmidt’s circa-1977 white Jim Homuth-style mask, think Jim Shaw and Gary “Suitcase” Smith, have Junior B Leduc Riggers logo decal on the temples. The fourth is a Gerry Schultz-like style mask that was worn by a minor hockey goalie in the Edmonton area in the late-1970s and has a modern era Fuhr-style paint job on it.
All four masks have their sparse interior padding.
The cream Liut-style mask has “Marty Schmidt” written in blue marker across the top of the inside. Schmidt wore it and the red and yellow striped mask while playing junior hockey.
The Leduc Riggers mask with “Marty Schmidt” in blue marker across the top of the inside has leather and canvas straps and a Cooper backplate.
The Schultz-like mask with “Made by Marty Schmidt” handwritten in black marker inside the left ear has straps.
