This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/6/2018
Gleefully extracted by excited kids throughout the Original Six era, we have a considerably large group of newspaper hockey pictures totaling over 225, with examples from Le Samedi, Perspectives, La Patrie and Star Weekly. Highlighted by 5 seldom-seen Le Samedi Montreal Canadiens pictures from 1928 including Morenz and Hainsworth, we also have 12 examples from The Star Weekly from 1957/58 including Howe/Kelly, Plante/Beliveau and a 1957-58 Habs team picture, this is followed by 45 different La Patrie pictures from the early-1950s including an example signed by Jean Beliveau, along with another approx. 145 Perspectives pictures from circa 1959-66, highlighted by 5 of the 6 issued 1965-66 NHL First All-Star Team pictures with Howe, Hull, Hall, Mikita and Pilote – with only Laperriere needed for completion.
Also included, we have 17 full copies of the Perspectives magazine from 1959/60, with each containing their hockey picture insert, highlighted by Sawchuk, Hull and Jacques Plante. The additional Le Samdei pictures from 1928 include Joliat, Mantha and Gagne, while highlights within the Perspectives pictures to include Hull, Sawchuk, Plante, Howe, Beliveau, Harvey and others, with many having more than one example present, as the Perspectives ran for a number of years, issuing different images of the same players. The Le Samdei pictures (10 ½” x 14”) show toning with edge tears and some light staining and creasing, with the Joliat example both trimmed along it’s borders and torn from the base. The Star Weekly pictures (approx. 9 ½” x 13 ½”) have been nicely removed and appear to exhibit just light wear, while the La Patrie examples (approx. 11” x 15 ½”) show heavier wear with edge tears, wrinkles, and some with light soiling. Finally, the 1965-66 Perspectives First NHL All-Star Team pictures (10 ½” x 14 ½”) are on premium stock and remain in beautiful condition, with just some edge toning.
