Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/6/2018
Selected by Canadian sports editors in 1950 as Canada's greatest team in the first half of the 20th century, the Ottawa Senators dominated throughout the early days of the NHL, winning the Stanley Cup in 1920, 1921, 1923 and 1927. This pairing of antique postcards from the Roaring Twenties begins with a collage-style example taken from a larger cabinet photo from 1919-20 depicting the full Senators squad including Hall-of-Famers Clint Benedict, Frank Nighbor, Sprague Cleghorn, Cy Denneny, Eddie Gerard, George Boucher, Punch Broadbent and Jack Darragh. The second postcard pictures the dapper team as they prepare to board a train, with HOFers Denneny, Benedict, Broadbent, Boucher, Gerard, Nighbor and King Clancy all visible.
With an undivided postcard back, the 1919-20 example has a large crease along with toning, light staining and edge wear, with “1919-20” handwritten in pencil over the notation area. The 1921 postcard has an area of moderate surface wear including an indentation, with a pair of pinholes also visible along with pencil notations over the reverse.
