Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/6/2018
Existing as both junior and senior teams since the 1920s, the Trail Smoke Eaters were founded in 1926, with the senior incarnation winning Allan Cups as amateur champions of Canada in both 1938 and 1962. Celebrating that first championship in 1938, we have a pair of real photo Smoke Eaters postcards, with an example issued for the 1937-38 season, along with a second that was issued after the Smoke Eaters’ Allan Cup victory. Nearly identical in style with collage-style portrait images, one mentions simply “1937-38” and “B.C. Champions”, while the second example pictures the Allan Cup along with “1938” and “Canadian Senior Amateur Hockey Champions”. Each postcard also feature’s an undivided postal reverse, with name handwritten in pencil over the “1937-38” example.
Both examples display beautifully, with lower technical grades, with the 1937-38 postcard exhibiting creases and wrinkles along with moderate corner wear.
By winning the 1938 Allan Cup, the Trail Smoke Eaters also won the right to represent Canada at the 1939 World Ice Hockey Championships tournament in Basle and Zurich, Switzerland. A 55-game European tour that preceded the tournament saw the club only lose one game and tie another, with the Smoke Eaters winning the World Championship while outscoring their opponents 42-1.
