Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2014
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/25/2014
Sports and politics clashed after the Soviets crossed into Afghanistan in December of 1979 to support the Afghan communist government in a conflict with anti-communist Muslim forces, and soon after, threats of boycotting the 1980 Olympics in Moscow began to take hold, led by the Americans and soon after, more than 60 countries joined in the protest. Offered is a rare medal given to athletes on the Canadian Olympic team which had joined in the boycott, measuring over 3” in diameter, with one side reading in both French and English as “In Honour and Recognition Canada”, and the reverse as “Member 1980 Canadian Olympic Team Games of the XXIInd Olympiad, Moscow" (bilingual) with the Canadian Olympic symbol. The medal comes complete with its red and white ribbon attached, and aside from darkening, this rare piece is in wonderful condition with no scratching. The ribbon also remains in great shape with clean and bright colors. Comes with its original red Olympic bag.
