Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2014
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/25/2014
The greatest goaltender in the history of international hockey, Vladislav Tretiak, has signed this wonderful and very, very heavy "Poke Check" sculpture by Yuri Ferdman. Born in Russia and raised in Latvia, Ferdman has grown an extreme love and passion for hockey since childhood. He works and lives in Toronto where he has devoted his love for hockey into the art of sculpture-making. This amazing creation was crafted with scrap metal by Ferdman, who learned welding to develop his distinctive form of sculpture. Tretiak has placed a big bold black marker autograph across the top of the smooth, silvery base, which measures about 15 1/2" x 10" and stands roughly 1" tall. The sculpture, which was made in 2007, stands 11" tall overall and weighs a very substantial 39 1/2 pounds (17.8 kilograms). It was signed by Tretiak at the Hockey Hall of Fame event organized by the Canada Eurasia Russia Business Association (CERBA) in 2009. The artist signature is on the side of the base and dated. Please take note that this lot may be subject to a silent reserve. Comes with a COA. Ferdman has exhibited at Toronto City Hall, the Air Canada Centre and the Hockey Hall of Fame. Some of his work is privately owned by Canadian Prime Minister Steven Harper and numerous Canadian and Russian professional hockey players.
How the sculpture was created: “The statue is made of scrap metal which is welded together in a figurine using a MIG-welding machine and various cutting, drilling and polishing tools to finish. The artist carefully attaches small pieces of wire and scrap metal to a wire frame using the MIG-welding machine. It is finished by cutting, grinding, polishing and blackening the metal. The method used is unique and laborious, which makes it one-of-a-kind sculpture.”
