One of the nicest Olympic hockey jerseys ever offered for auction, Billy Dawe's fantastic and historic photo-matched Team Canada 1952 Olympic gold medal game-worn captain's wool sweater has been preserved in unbelievable condition. Gold medal winners at the 1950 world championships, the Edmonton Mercurys were chosen to represent Canada at the Olympic hockey tournament in Oslo. Under Dawe's on-ice leadership, the Mercurys won their first seven games in Norway. They sealed Canada's sixth Olympic gold medal in hockey with a 3-3 tie on February 24 against the United States. Dawe scored the first of Canada's two goals late in the first period and the Americans came back twice to tie the game and salvage a silver medal. The 1952 gold medal would prove to be Canada's last at the Olympics for the next 50 years. The amazing "52 Olympics Edmonton Mercurys" felt and chain-stitched crest is sewn on the front of this wool wonder which retains vibrant and strong red, white, and blue colors with its original "Pure Wool Caldwell Product" tagging in the back of the neck. Gorgeous blue felt maple leaves with yellow and light blue accent stitching book end the absolutely spectacular "Canada" nameplate sewn on the back above the blue and white double felt #5 with two rows of bright red thread accent stitching. Dawe's number also appears on the left sleeve in white and red double felt. There are three team repairs on the right sleeve and another nice sewing fix on the left sleeve at the elbow. A vintage photo of Dawe wearing this jersey is matched by the distinctive placement and shape of the white and blue double felt captain's C sewn on the left breast. The photo clearly shows the left side of the letter slants slightly to the right and that the open right side has ends that are sewn on in a somewhat open position, which matches what shows in the photo of Dawe. There are light reddish-brown stains that do not diminish the jersey on the white felt of the C and on the magnificent team crest on the front, which has gold coloring to the sides and the trophy at the bottom that are original to the jersey. This museum-worthy jersey was obtained directly from Billy Dawe a few years ago and comes with Dawe's signed LOA.
