It is impossible to overstate the impact that Slap Shot has had on the game of hockey. The 1977 feature film starring the late Paul Newman is a cult classic whose numerous quotable lines are commonly used to this day throughout the game, often by those who weren’t even born when player-coach Reg Dunlop urged his fictional Charlestown Chiefs to play “Old Time Hockey” and “Let ‘Em Know You’re There!” Slap Shot was named “The Best Guy Movie of All Time” by Maxim magazine in 1998, beating out the likes of “Raging Bull” and “The Godfather”. Newman said that filming Slap Shot was the most fun he ever had making a movie.
Presumably that’s as much fun as the Hanson Brothers had playing with the toy cars they carted around on the road. “OK guys, show us what you’ve got!” With their coach finally calling on them to hit the ice, the trio of cinematic brothers launch themselves into silver screen glory on a three-minute shift that is the stuff of Don Cherry’s dreams. “What are you guys doing?” asks Dunlop. You know the answer. “Putting on the foil.” “Every game.” “Yeah, you want some?” Jeff, Steve and Jack, we can’t get enough! The film Hansons were portrayed by brothers Jeff and Steve Carlson and Dave “Killer” Hanson, who were all teammates with the likes of Anaheim Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau on the very real Johnstown Jets of the North American Hockey League. The Jets were the inspiration for the screenplay written by Nancy Dowd, who was the sister of Ned Dowd, a Jets player who portrayed ultra goon Ogie Ogilthorpe in the movie.
This is a unique opportunity to obtain one, two or all three “Hanson Brothers” 1977 Slap Shot Charlestown Chiefs film-worn jerseys directly from the actors themselves. Each Chiefs blue “road” jersey is the one that was kept by its respective Hanson Brother when filming was completed. All three Hanson Brothers jerseys come with individual letters of authenticity signed by their respective actor-player. So if you want in, get me a soda, “and none of that stinkin’ root beer!”
The role of Jack Hanson was portrayed by Dave "Killer" Hanson, a teammate of the three Carlson brothers on the real Johnstown Jets of the North America Hockey League in the mid-1970s. Jack Carlson was originally cast to play Jack Hanson in Slap Shot but he was unable to act in the film because he was called up by the Edmonton Oilers for the WHA playoffs. Dave Hanson was originally going to play the part of Dave "Killer" Carlson, whose role was ultimately portrayed by actor Jerry Houser. No stranger to the penalty box, defenseman Dave Hanson racked up 560 penalty minutes in two seasons with the Johnstown Jets from 1974-76, and an additional 54 PIMs in nine playoff games. He played a total of 142 regular season and playoff games in the WHA and NHL, including 100 games with the notorious Birmingham Bulls of the late-1970s were he totaled 501 penalty minutes. That is the equivalent of one fighting major per game. Clearly, Dave had his rightful place wearing this Chiefs' #16 jersey as left wing Jack Hanson on a line with his cinematic brothers Steve and Jeff. Classic red Rawlings size 48 tagging sits in the back of the neck of this beauty. The patriotic shield sewn on the left shoulder features bright red, white blue colors with a bit of loss to the red and blue screening, mostly in the "Charlestown All-America City" phrase in the middle. Wonderfully preserved with bright colors to the yellow and white double twill "Chiefs" sewn on the front and number 16 sewn on the back and both sleeves. Comes with Dave Hanson's signed LOA.
