It is impossible to overstate the impact that Slap Shot has had on the game of hockey. The 1977 feature film starring the late Paul Newman is a cult classic whose numerous quotable lines are commonly used to this day throughout the game, often by those who weren’t even born when player-coach Reg Dunlop urged his fictional Charlestown Chiefs to play “Old Time Hockey” and “Let ‘Em Know You’re There!” Slap Shot was named “The Best Guy Movie of All Time” by Maxim magazine in 1998, beating out the likes of “Raging Bull” and “The Godfather”. Newman said that filming Slap Shot was the most fun he ever had making a movie.
Presumably that’s as much fun as the Hanson Brothers had playing with the toy cars they carted around on the road. “OK guys, show us what you’ve got!” With their coach finally calling on them to hit the ice, the trio of cinematic brothers launch themselves into silver screen glory on a three-minute shift that is the stuff of Don Cherry’s dreams. “What are you guys doing?” asks Dunlop. You know the answer. “Putting on the foil.” “Every game.” “Yeah, you want some?” Jeff, Steve and Jack, we can’t get enough! The film Hansons were portrayed by brothers Jeff and Steve Carlson and Dave “Killer” Hanson, who were all teammates with the likes of Anaheim Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau on the very real Johnstown Jets of the North American Hockey League. The Jets were the inspiration for the screenplay written by Nancy Dowd, who was the sister of Ned Dowd, a Jets player who portrayed ultra goon Ogie Ogilthorpe in the movie.
This is a unique opportunity to obtain one, two or all three “Hanson Brothers” 1977 Slap Shot Charlestown Chiefs film-worn jerseys directly from the actors themselves. Each Chiefs blue “road” jersey is the one that was kept by its respective Hanson Brother when filming was completed. All three Hanson Brothers jerseys come with individual letters of authenticity signed by their respective actor-player. So if you want in, get me a soda, “and none of that stinkin’ root beer!”
The role of Steve Hanson, the center on the Hanson Brothers line in Slap Shot, was portrayed by Steve Carlson, who had nine goals and 12 assists for 21 points in 52 games with a 1979-80 L.A. Kings lineup that featured the Triple Crown line of Charlie Simmer, Dave Taylor and HOFer Marcel Dionne. Prior to that, Carlson totaled 80 points and 132 PIMs in 173 games with Minnesota, New England and Edmonton in the WHA. The most skilled hockey player of the cinematic Hansons and real-life Carlsons, Steve led the 1974-75 Johnstown Jets to the NAHL title with 30 goals and 88 points in 70 regular season games, and six goals and 10 points in a dozen playoff games. He still managed to rack up 84 PIMs with the Jets during the season, and another 39 in the playoffs! His #17 Chiefs jersey has a classic red Rawlings size 46 tag in the back of the neck. The "Charlestown All-America City" shield sewn on the left shoulder is nicely preserved with a bit of loss to the screened red and blue colors that remain quite sharp. Nice colors to the yellow and white double twill numbers on the back and both sleeves as well as the "Chiefs" crest sewn on the front which has a couple of pencil-like lines in the right side of the F and the middle of the S. This amazing piece of hockey and film history comes with Steve Carlson's signed LOA.
