Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2014

From over a century ago when lacrosse was Canada's national sport and pro hockey was still in its relatively early stages, this fascinating assembly features several men who were two-sport or multi-sport stars and has garnered bragging rights at PSA as the finest set of its kind. With a GPA of 5.30, the 98 encapsulated scarcities include (55) examples which are in the none-ever-graded-higher-by-PSA "club", 27 of them being peerless Pop-1s! Hockey superstar Newsy Lalonde also forged a legend as one of the all-time greatest lacrosse players, with his card #97 here slabbed EX-MT 6 and joined by two other similar examples on the PSA Population Report as the finest ever submitted to the company for encapsulation. Another goal-scoring whiz on the ice, Joe Malone, appears in the set, with his Pop-2 EX-MT 6 card also atop the PSA leader board in his "slot". The same stats (Pop-2 EX-MT 6 with none higher) are put up by the card of Joe Cattarinich, a member of the very first Montreal Canadiens hockey team, later an owner of the team and a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame. Famed hockey manager Tommy Gorman, (#16 Pop-4 EX 5 with none higher) and hockey referee Mickey Ions, (#68 Pop-2 EX 5 with 3 higher), are also in the hockey shrine, while Jeff Malone (#85 Pop-1 EX-MT 6 with none higher) was a member of the Quebec Bulldogs Stanley Cup championship team of 1912-13. Other players who were also prominent with skates on in the winter and recognizable to hockey historians are 15-Currie, 18-Hutton, 20-Powers, 21-Gaul, 22-Butterworth, 26-MacMillan, 32-Degan, 38-Allen and 48-McKerrow, while card #42 pictures boxing Hall-of-Famer Tommy Burns. Ah yes, and then lacrosse which is represented by lacrosse HOFers 56-T. Gifford, 58-G. Spring, 59-C. Spring, 60-Rennie, 65-Feeney, 66-J. Gifford, 67-Murton and 70-Felker, while another five men are enshrined in British Columbia's Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Featuring brilliant colors and charismatic images, this perennial PSA award-winning set offers an array of intrigue, with all individual cards viewable on the PSA Set Registry (in the hockey section), where individual grades are also included. Assembled and now offered by Mr. Simon Bourque, this set "scores" in a number of impressive ways.
