Wayne Gretzky was 11 yrs when he and his Brantford Novice team took part in the 13th Annual Novice Tournament held in Brampton Ontario from March 18 to March 25, 1972. The Great One, seen with his teammates on page 6, wore number 9 then because of his hero Gordie Howe, and along with Gretz, the Brantford lineup boasted future NHL goalie Greg Stefan, wearing #30. Browsing through this great program, which shows a few markings handwritten in pencil and ink by the program’s original owner, we also see Steve Larmer on the Peterborough squad (page 27), minor leaguer-turned-famous broadcaster Jim Ralph with Sault Ste. Marie (page 30), and “Les Trois Denis” - Denis Savard, Denis Cyr, and Denis Tremblay with Verdun (page 32), a threesome which would form a formidable line when they eventually reached Junior with Montreal. Savard and Cyr would both make it to the bigs, and Savard would ultimately find himself in the HOF, inducted in 2000. A great program, and aside from the handwritten markings on just a few pages, is in terrific condition with its 36 pages showing no tears or creases.
