Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2014

Individual portraits of Lord and Lady Stanley make for a perfect pair, appearing on the covers of these fascinating finds; two complete 1888 issues of The Dominion Illustrated magazine. The new Governor General of Canada, "His Excellency the Right Honourable Sir Frederick Arthur Stanley, Baron Stanley of Preston, G.C.B.," is depicted on the cover of the July 14, 1888 edition, Vol. 1, No. 2 of the Montreal-based weekly. Lady Stanley of Preston's "Constance Stanley of Preston" facsimile signature appears below her portrait on the cover of the November 10, 1888 issue, Vol. 1, No. 19, with "Toronto" joining "Montreal" on the cover. Wonderful displays, they were issued less than a year before the couple witnessed their first official hockey game at the 1889 Montreal Winter Carnival. Each is a complete issue with the former, (16 pages), having survived in remarkable EX condition with no spine splits, while the latter (20 pages), looks to have been removed from a bound volume, with the taped-at-the-spine covers enveloping the rest of the (loose) pages and two tears in the front cover (inch, half-inch) to note. . The magazines are 10 5/8” x 14 1/4”.
