The 21st NHL All-Star Game, held on January 16, 1968, was a bittersweet affair for all concerned. Bill Masterton, the popular Minnesota North Stars forward, had died just the day prior from head injuries suffered from an on-ice mishap, and the mood for the All-Star festivities was sombre. Yet the game went on, staged at Maple Leaf Gardens, with a peach-fuzzed Bobby Orr making his All-Star debut and wearing number 5 because big Jean Beliveau had full rights to number 4. In the end, the previous year’s Cup champion Toronto Maple Leafs pulled out a 4-3 win over the star-laden opposition that boasted the likes of Howe, Hull, Beliveau and Orr. Imagine! This would also be the last time the Cup champions faced an all-star squad, as the league went with East vs. West beginning the following season. Offered is the program and ticket stub from the big night in 1968, with the ticket stub in wonderful condition save for the owner handwriting “1968” on the front and the game score on the back. The top corner of the front and back of the program, which features Johnny Bower on the cover, has some paper damage, there is also water damage inside as well, overall program is in good condition at best but makes for an interesting read. And we’ve got a bonus for you! Another ticket stub thrown in, this from the Leafs 1st game of the 1967-68 season, on Oct. 14th, when the Leafs downed the Chicago Black Hawks 5-1 at the Gardens. Please note that the owner of the stub wrote “1968” on the face of it, but it was actually 1967 when this opening game was held.
