Reading old programs is just about the most fun you can have with your clothes on, and we have 4 Maple Leaf Gardens game programs from the 1940s to dive into and learn very cool things about the great game and players from years gone by. The Oct. 30, 1943 Gardens program (with Major Conn Smythe adorning the cover), is a complete 72-page beauty with all pages intact, including the line-up page which has a couple of players handwritten in in pencil. (Leafs won the game 5-2). Our program from December 1, 1945, when Chicago was visiting Toronto, is an 80-page gem, completely intact with no marks, tears, or damage whatsoever. (The Hawks would clobber the Leafs 8-2 on this night). From March 1, 1947, the Detroit Red Wings visited the Gardens, and our 80-page program features a young rookie in the lineup for Detroit named Howe, wearing number 17, before Mr. Hockey would become Mr. Hockey and don his famous number 9. This program is also in outstanding condition with a small crease in the corner of the back cover to note, and some slight water damage at the back. (Detroit would win this game 5-4). And finally a Gardens program from Oct. 22, 1949 when the Rangers came to Toronto, autographed in black pen on the cover by Ted Kennedy, with this 84-pager in nice condition, with just the lineup page loose from its staples, and a fan has handwritten in pencil the players’ goals and assists from that night. The crossword puzzle has also been done with pencil. (This game ended in a 2-2 tie).
