Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2014
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/25/2014
At first glance it’s just an equipment bag filled with various hockey items. But upon closer inspection, one realizes it’s a bag that belonged to the Maurice “Rocket” Richard, a bag he used in the 1990s when refereeing oldtimers games, screened on the outside as "Sherwood” along with “Greatest Hockey Legends – All-Stars – Montreal", and embroidered above as “Maurice Richard”. The bag is in nice condition, with marks on the bottom and a few slices here and there, probably from skate blades, and has Richard's laminated business card attached. Inside this red and blue duffel bag, which measures 35” in length, are two of the Rocket’s referee jerseys, one with “9” on the back and the other with “Richard”. The number “9” game-used jersey is tagged in the collar as an “XXL”, while the “Richard” gamer has had the tag removed. An unidentified patch is sewn on the left breast. The number “9” is of vinyl material attached onto the jersey while the “Richard” patch is rubberized lettering on a white sewn-on name plate. This gamer has a couple of small marks noticeable on the front. Also to be found in Rocket’s duffel bag are two pairs of game-worn referee’s pants, both made by CCM, both have belts, and one also has a pair of black Muttoneers suspenders attached. Both pairs are in excellent condition with no tears or damage of any kind. Further into the bag we find a pair of size 14 ½ shin pads from CCM to protect Rocket’s legs from flying pucks and errant sticks, with the inside felt showing some darkening from use. Last but not least is of course Rocket’s whistle, complete with worn white tape around part of it. This equipment, originally from the Maurice Richard Collection, is probably the last uniforms and equipment the great man would wear, and the whistle is one he used for most of his officiating career. A wonderful lot indeed.
