Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2014
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/25/2014
It's an unparallelled NHL game-worn wool jersey, a vintage beauty as rare as they come, preserved in outstanding condition and ready for new generations to behold. This is what the hobby is all about, the search and discovery of an amazing artifact to make even the keepers of the Hockey Hall of Fame drool. Offered is a circa 1935-36 game-worn Chicago Black Hawks jersey, a style only worn by the Hawks from 1935 to 1937, originally obtained from the Paul Thompson estate in Calgary, and donned by three-time Stanley Cup champion Thompson in a season that saw the left winger finish in the league's top 10 scorers, as he would do for five straight campaigns in the mid-1930s. And what a gamer it is, highlighted by the round chenille crest with the ultra-rare red-faced logo on the front and with the black chenille number "6" on the back, with at least 13 team repairs including 4 on the front, 4 on the back, 2 on the right sleeve, and another 3 on the left sleeve. No moths have ever discovered this, no foreign marks have made their way onto it, while we see a later vintage stitching job on the front crest, which came this way from the Thompson family, and the top corner of the #6 has come apart from its seams. A look at the inside hem sees a French-embroidered "Thompson" sewn on, definitely a nice touch to an already stunning example of a vintage gamer. Thompson, born in Calgary in 1906 and deceased in 1991, played 13 seasons in the NHL, beginning with the New York Rangers in 1926 where he would spend 5 seasons before joining the Black Hawks in 1931 and lacing 'em up for 8 campaigns in the Windy City. Thompson, who would hoist the Stanley Cup with the Rangers in 1928 and with the Hawks in '34 and '38, was the younger brother of HOFer Tiny Thompson, the legendary goaltender inducted into the Hall in 1959, and who would pass away 10 years prior to Paul in 1981. Paul would also coach the Hawks from 1938-39 to 1944-45. A fantastic and incredibly rare game-worn NHL jersey from a sensational player during the Great Depression era, and comes with several LOAs including Classic Auctions, Heritage Auctions, and the MeiGray Group. Please take note that this lot may be subject to a silent reserve.
