Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2014

Always intriguing are NHL contracts, with this official document revealing that Conn Smythe and the Maple Leafs wasted little time in re-signing future team record holder and Hall-of-Famer George Armstrong after he completed his first full season with the club. Calling for a salary of $8000 for the 1953-54 campaign, the contract was signed March 24, 1953, two days after Toronto's regular season concluded with a rare out-of-the-playoffs fifth place finish. The coveted signatures of Smythe and Armstrong are in bold blue ink, one-above-the-other, on the back of the two-sided document, with NHL president Clarence Campbell's big flowing sig gracing the front. Standard fold lines and two punch holes are to mention. Hailing from the small town of Falconbridge, Ontario (near Sudbury), "Army" would valiantly toil 20 seasons for Toronto, with his 11 seasons as team captain, another club record!
