Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2014

Fun lot from former big leaguer Brit Selby, featuring Selby's WHA Toronto Toros game-worn helmet from 1973-74 or '74-'75, his game-worn Leafs skates from the late-'60s early-'70s, his early-70s St. Louis Blues cardigan sweater, and wardrobe bags from the WHA New England Whalers and Toronto Toros. With Selby's LOA. Selby’s helmet with football-style red stripe features the Toros logo on each side, with the number “15” sticker on the back half peeled off and shows lot of game-use with marks and scratches throughout. The interior suspension padding of Selby’s Toros Northland “Dome” helmet is intact, although the chin strap has come apart and has been attached by aging white tape on the other side. His two wardrobe bags, a green beauty from his stint with the New England Whalers during the 1972-73 season when he and his WHA squad would capture the first-ever Avco Cup, has pseudo-leather trimming featuring a 3-inch in diameter Whalers logo on the front, with no marks or tears, and comes complete with an Air Canada tag attached to one of the handles. The other wardrobe bag is a white Toronto Toros bag with the Toros logo measuring 4” across adorning one side and “Sport O’Keefe on the other, as well as on the back too. Slight dirt marks are noticeable in various places on this white, red, and blue vinyl suit bag, but all in all is in excellent condition. From Selby’s days with the St. Louis Blues (1970-71, and 1971-’72), when he played a total of 59 games over the two seasons, comes this nice blue button-up wool sweater to make the ladies swoon. This blue sweater has an embroidered number “18” on the left side, is tagged in the collar as “100% Pure Wool, Lemmermayer, Vienna, Austria, and aside from a missing collar button, the Blues sweater has just one small and almost unnoticeable mark on the left sleeve, a tiny hole on the right breast, and a slight hint of yellowing in the collar. Selby’s 1960s game-used pair of C.C.M Tackaberry skates have partially-taped number 15 on each heel, a number he would own from 1969 to ’71 with the Leafs. These lace-free Tacks show tremendous game-use, with scuffed toes and scuffed and nicked leather sides, along with some rust on the blades and loose inside soles. Brit Selby was a former Calder Trophy winner when he broke into the NHL with the Toronto Maple Leafs during the 1965-66 campaign, and his two seasons with the Toronto Toros, in ’73-’74 and ’74-’75, were his final seasons as a big leaguer before calling it quits.
