Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2014

Pittsburgh has a rich hockey tradition that predates the Penguins and includes the city's first NHL team, the Pirates, as well as its American Hockey League franchise, the Hornets. This dark red Hornets game-worn jersey from the 1951-52 AHL season was worn by forward Gord Hannigan, who went on to make his NHL debut with the Maple Leafs the following season. Hannigan contributed 50 points and his 24 goals were second only to George Armstrong's 30 on the Hornets. This minor league treasure has green Pittsburgh Sport Shop tagging sewn on the inner hem along with a size 48 "Dry Clean Only" flag tag. Number 14 is sewn on both the front and back of this crew-neck sweater in white on white double twill. There are seven red twill stars sewn on the white bands of each sleeve, which both had round patches removed. A big hole on the left sleeve and a couple of holes on the right sleeve do not diminish the display of this historic Hornets gamer, which also has a few thick black stains on and to the left of the "1" on the back, possibly from tape remnants/residue. Comes with an LOA from the Hannigan family. [red] Addendum; This Pittsburgh Hornets game-worn jersey is not from 1951-52. It was common for Hornets players back in that era to practice in game-worn jerseys from previous seasons. Based on new photographic evidence, particularly the font of the #4, we believe this game-worn jersey was originally worn in the 1948-49 season and later used by Hannigan in practices when he joined the club. Players who wore the #14 in 1948-49 are Eldred Kobussen and Tod Sloan.[/red]
