The juggernaut known as the New York Islanders captured their fourth consecutive Stanley Cup in the spring of 1983, taking out the Washington Capitals 3 games to 1, the Rangers in 6 games, and the Bruins in 6 before going up against the young upstart Edmonton Oilers, who at that point were in over their heads against the powerful Islanders squad filled to the brim with seasoned stars such as Bossy, Trottier, Gillies, Nystrom, "Battling" Billy Smith, and a fellow with a long-outdated helmet and unparalleled work ethic by the name of Robert "Butch" Goring. Goring, a centerman brought to the Islanders from the L.A. Kings before their first Cup win in 1980, who would be awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy in the spring of '81, and who was considered the originator of the playoff beard. But when he donned the jersey he punched the clock, and his style proved the perfect blend among the superstars on the team, greatly appreciated by teammates and coaches alike. The jersey Goring wore in the 1983 Stanley Cup playoffs, including the finals, is offered here, tagged in the collar as a Sandow, with CCM screened on the hem, a style of which was worn by Goring and his teammates for the '83 playoffs and finals only. A handwritten "44" is on the Sandow collar tag, as is a handwritten "91", Goring's number. Marks fill the team crest and the long diagonal mark on the crest is video-matched, as is the black mark on the right sleeve below the numbers. Marks line both sleeves, an unrepaired hole is found on the left sleeve, with the orange and white double tackle twill numbers and "Goring" letters on the nameplate jumping out in fine fashion. A remarkable player, a key member of a powerhouse early-80s dynasty, and one who would lace 'em up on Long Island for another 1 1/2 seasons after the fourth Cup, plus a short stint in Boston, before his career would finally come to an end. A truly important game-worn jersey, and comes with an LOA from Mr. Goring.
