You can’t help but think of the very first Stanley Cup champions when you look at this fascinating lot of seven original Montreal Amateur Athletic Association annual membership passes from the early years of the 20th century. Each of these seven vintage official M.A.A.A. passes displays the famous sports club’s Winged Wheel logo, emblematic of the legendary 1893 Stanley Cup champions. These celluloid passes roughly in the shape of a hockey rink date from 1907-1921 and each measures about 3” x 1 3/4". The 1907, 1908 and 1910 passes are slightly more oval and each of those passes “Expires Nov. 1st” of the indicated year, as does the orange 1915 pass, which has more of a hockey rink shape. The purple 1916 pass “Expires May 1st”, as do the red 1917, and white 1921 passes. The seven passes are made out in the handwritten member’s name of “H. W. Pillow”, with the names on the 1907, 1908 and 1910 passes somewhat obscured as are the signatures of club secretary and treasurer Davidson. The 1915 pass is signed by secretary-treasurer Dunn and “Life Member” is stamped on the 1916, 1917 and 1921 passes, which are all signed by secretary treasurer R. E. Melville. All seven passes are wonderfully preserved, with some reddish staining on the three oldest passes. A wonderful collection of vintage M.A.A.A. passes that evoke memories of the original Stanley Cup champions!
