Early golf legend Harry Vardon won the British Open six times from 1896-1914 as well as the U.S. Open in 1900. Offered is Vardon's signed 1909 letter which he wrote in his own hand on his personal letterhead. Vardon, who died in 1937, was inducted posthumously into the World Golf Hall of Fame's inaugural Class of 1974. The letter, which displays a strong Vardon signature in blank fountain pen ink, was originally from the Sandy Lodge Golf Club Sotheby's sale and comes with various provenance documents. With quartered crease folds and a stain in the upper right portion, this historic Vardon signed letter has been professionally matted and framed. Please see our online description for more details. One of the principal characters in the 2005 feature film The Greatest Game Ever Played, Vardon wrote the letter dated March 16, 1909 to J. Francis Markes, who founded the Sandy Lodge Golf Club.
Vardon’s letterhead displays his first four British Open medals and his U.S. Open medal.
The letter displays to a size of 6 3/4" x 8” in a brown matte mounted in a 17” x 15 1/2" frame along with a plaque with Vardon’s name and the years of his seven major titles.
