Nice trio of early-1980s Expos National League contracts includes Bill Gullickson's 1982 contract and the 1983 contracts of the late Charlie Lea and closer Jeff Reardon. All three right-handed pitchers have signed their respective contracts along with Expos GM John McHale and National League president Charles S. "Chub" Feeney, both of whom are deceased. Each The National League of Professional Baseball Clubs Uniform Player's Contract measures 11" x 8 1/2" with typewritten terms between the "Montreal Baseball Club Ltd." and each of the three respective players. All of these documents, including the contracts and addendums, have been three-hole-punched through the left side.
Gullickson’s 1982 contract calls for a salary of $200,000 and is dated February 2, 1982, signed in black ballpoint by Gullickson, in black marker by McHale, and in blue ballpoint by Feeney, who has dated his signature Feb. 23, 1982, along with a blue ink National League office “Feb 22 82” date stamp.
Gullickson has signed and dated Feb. 15, 1982 in black ballpoint on a two-page addendum with incentive, attendance and performance bonuses, that McHale signed in black marker and dated “2-11-82”.
Lea’s 1983 contract calls for a salary of $205,000 and is dated February 8, 1983, signed in blue ballpoint by Lea, in black marker by McHale, and in blue ballpoint by Feeney, who has dated his signature Feb. 22, 1982, along with a blue ink National League office “Feb 22 83” date stamp.
Lea, who died on November 11, 2011, has signed and dated 2/8/83 in blue ballpoint on a two-page addendum with incentive bonuses, that McHale signed in black marker. Lea earned an additional $40,000 for making a career-high 33 starts in 1983.
Reardon’s 1983 contract calls for a salary of $442,000 and is dated April 4, 1983, signed in black ballpoint by Reardon, in black marker by McHale, and in blue ballpoint by Feeney, who has dated his signature April 25, 1983, along with a blue ink National League office “Apr 22 83” date stamp.
Reardon’s signature also appears on four documents enclosed with his contract, including an acknowledgment of a $50,000 loan from the Expos which he has signed and dated Feb. 20, 1983 in black marker. Reardon and McHale have both initialed a date change in the fourth paragraph of this original document with an Apr 22 83 National League office date stamp. Reardon has signed in black ink on a two-page addendum dated April 4, 1983 i with incentive, attendance and performance bonuses, that McHale signed in black marker. Reardon earned an additional $40,000 for making 66 appearances with the Expos in 1983. Reardon and McHale have also signed and addendum for a payment of $217,000 to an Employee Benefit Plan as well as the four-page agreement laying out terms of the Employee Benefit Plan, both documents also date stamped Apr 22 85 by the National League office.
