Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2013

The biggest name the game has ever known, the Babe transcended baseball and all of sports during the Roaring '20s as his slugging exploits sent the New York Yankees on to greatness. Offered is a vintage 1920s Babe Ruth Louisville Slugger Hillerich & Bradsby 40 BR model store-bought baseball bat. The "40" in the label is a line of retail store model bats and the B.R. initials are for the Babe Ruth model. This substantial piece of vintage lumber measures 35 3/4" long with what appears to be a stylized "F" etched in the knob that obsures the original number stamp that is likely a "36". Cracked in the handle, it is otherwise nicely preserved with some age cracking in the barrel, which bears the George "Babe" Ruth facsimile signature. The “Trade Mark Reg. U.S. Pat. Off.” stamp below the Louisville Slugger, Hillerich & Bradsby Co. oval dates the bat to prior to 1930, when the stamp changed to “Trade Mark Reg.” only.
