Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2013
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/18/2013
The late 1950s were a great championship era for Montreal hockey. The NHL’s Canadiens were in the midst of winning five straight Stanley Cups when the Montreal Nationale claimed the 1956-57 Metropolitan Montreal Junior League title. Offered are a vintage 1956-57 MMJL champions fountain pen and five 8x10 photos, including four of the Montreal Nationale along with a photo collage of the 1956-57 MMJL All-Star teams. “1956-57 Champion Hockey Junior” is printed in gold-colored letters on the light blue bottom portion of a vintage fountain pen presented to a member of the Nationale in honor of the team’s championship. The 1956-57 Nationale team photo is a 7 1/2" x 10” original David Bier print with the legendary sports photographer’s name embossed in the bottom right corner. The David Bier Studios stamp is on the reverse with the handwritten notations “glace du Forum” and “29 Avril 1957” indicating that the team picture with the Nationale’s championship hardware displayed in front of them was taken on that date at the Montreal Forum. An 8x10 team photo was taken earlier the same month in a Forum dressing room. There is another team photo of the 1955-56 team and an action shot from a 1956 game against the Lachine Maroons. The 1956-57 MMJL All-Stars photo shows three members of the Nationale on the First Team and a fourth on the Second Team. The pen has some scratches and marks from use by its obviously proud owner. The photos are nicely preserved overall with expected handling for their vintage.
