The Edmonton Oilers knew they had someone special when they selected Paul Coffey sixth overall in the 1980 NHL Draft. Paul wore this photo-matched white mesh Oilers gamer during his 1980-81 rookie season, which led to Edmonton's stunning three-game sweep of Montreal in the first round of the playoffs. The swift and smooth-skating defenseman still had two 40-goal seasons in his future, including an unbelievable 138-point 1985-86 campaign when he claimed the second of his three Norris Trophies while scoring an astounding 48 goals to break Bobby Orr's single-season record for defensemen. This remarkable Coffey rookie-season Oilers game-worn jersey comes as it did when it was originally sold from the Peter Pocklington collection with the nameplate removed by the team. The Sandow logo is screened on the right tail and SK and laundry instruction flag tags remain in the back of the neck. The black diagonal mark on the right side of the collar and the black marks through the stripes on the left sleeve are among the 10 digital photo matches included of Coffey wearing this jersey during the 1980-81 season. Game wear includes black marks, red paint transfer, board burns and unrepaired burn holes, inner pilling and a number of team repairs. Comes with an Oilers LOA and a MeiGray certificate of registration. Photo matches also include the black linear mark in the white section of the lower right sleeve, two diagonal black marks below the Oilers crest, the black mark to the left of those on the right front and one black mark in the orange striping below, as well as a light black mark at the right of the number 7 on the right sleeve.
The team repairs include two sewing fixes on the right front tail, a repair down from the re-stitched front collar seam, two repairs on the back of the left sleeve and repairs on the orange and blue stripes on the right sleeve.
