Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2013

Awesome lot features Paul Coffey's first NHL contract with the Edmonton Oilers and the first Oilers road jersey he ever wore. Coffey and fellow HOFer Glen Sather each signed both the great defenseman's NHL Standard Player's Contract and its addendum, which are dated September 12, 1980. Coffey wore this fascinating photo-matched game-worn jersey when he first took to the ice as a member of the 1980-81 Edmonton Oilers. Worn by Oilers captain Ron Chipperfield for a large portion of Edmonton's inaugural NHL season, this gamer was stripped of its nameplate and issued to Coffey for preseason games in the fall of 1980 leading into his rookie season, with evidence of the removed captain's C on the left breast. Maska Superfil tagging remains in the neck and the Maska logo is embroidered on the rear right hem. The "Edmonton 1904-1979 - 75th Anniversary" patch worn by the Oilers in 1979-80 remains sewn on the right shoulder. Coffey's now-retired number 7 is sewn on the back and both sleeves. No nameplates were worn during the 1980-81 pre-season and this is photo-documented on the Edmonton Oilers history website. Small loop-style fight strap sewn inside the back. Game wear is there with numerous repairs, mainly on the front, along with countless stick marks, heavy board burns, unrepaired holes, and paint transfers throughout. Extensive pilling inside at the elbows and near the cuffs. Accompanied by a MeiGray letter of authenticity and a conclusive photo match from the 1980-81 pre-season showing Paul Coffey wearing this exact jersey with the large stick slash through oil drop on crest. Coffey’s contract calls for a $60,000 NHL salary in 1980-81 and $70,000 in 1981-82, and minor league salaries of $35,000 for both seasons. It indicates “To be arbitrated” for the third and fourth years of the contract both in the NHL and the minors. Coffey and Sather, who has signed on behalf of “Edmonton World Hockey Enterprises Ltd.”, placed bold blue ballpoint signatures on both the contract and the addendum, which calls for bonuses of $50,000 in 1980, $15,000 in 1981, and $10,000 in 1982. The signature of NHL president John Ziegler on the contract appears to be stamped. The NHL Central Registry initialed date and time stamp appears on both documents.
