“The most exciting young pitcher to ever wear a New York Met uniform” is how Tom Seaver is described on the back of this pack-fresh example of his 1968 Topps card. It has only centering as an issue, with an (OC) qualifier accompanying PSA’s lofty grade of MINT 9. Released a season prior to Tom Terrific leading the Mets to their improbable World Series title, card #45 mentions his impressive 16 wins and 18 complete games as a rookie, both Mets’ records. A cinch for Topps Rookie Pitcher of the Year in 1967, Seaver would go on to total 311 big league victories, securing his spot in Cooperstown. PSA Population Report numbers reveal that over 2600 similar second year Seaver cards have been examined by PSA graders over the years, with just 72 earning MINT 9 status, while this and another 37 are in the “9Q” column. Like Tom, impressive!
