Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2013
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/18/2013
One of Howie Morenz’s less-plentiful cards and from one of only two card sets issued in 1937-38, this World Wide Gum affair was discovered in a pack of gum after Morenz had died in hospital the previous season. Imagine the “oh!” gasped by the original owner. For the uninformed, the great Morenz had died in March of 1937 from complications from a broken leg he suffered in a game in January at the Montreal Forum. The bilingual write-up on the back refers to the tragedy, mentioning the game against the Black Hawks and concluding with, “complications set in and he passed away.” In the F-G neighborhood with multiple light creases and corner/edge wear but no outlandishly unsightly flaws, card #18 is the key in World Wide Gum’s big 135-card set and features that stirring image of a hockey immortal.
