The riveting image here is that of Hall-of-Famer Wilfred “Shorty” Green, posing proudly in his dandy Hamilton Tigers turtleneck sweater. At the end of that 1924-25 season however, Shorty wasn’t all that proud of being a Tiger. He played on a line with his brother “Red” and Billy Burch and as team captain, guided Hamilton players in refusing to play the playoffs against Montreal because of a pay issue! He ended up with the new New York Americans and had the distinction of scoring the first goal ever at Madison Square Garden. Shorty was elected posthumously to the Hall of Fame in 1962, two years after succumbing to cancer. Deemed worthy of EX 5 status by PSA, this example joins two other 5s on the PSA Population Report, with just five others out-scoring them in PSA history.
