Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2013
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/18/2013
A bold red ink autograph and an image of Hall-of-Famer Billy Birch are captivating and featured on this special 1-of-1 hockey card which also includes "The Broderick Collection" and Burch's induction year of 1974 on the front. The back reveals that Billy was born in Yonkers, New York, moved to Toronto at a young age and was the first U.S.-born player to skate in the NHL, being dubbed Yonkers Billy Burch when he suited up for the N.Y. Americans. Originally a Hamilton Tiger and the NHL's MVP and Hart Trophy recipient in 1924-25, Burch won the Lady Byng with the Amerks two years later. He finished up with Boston and Chicago in 1932-33, (the notation on the back dates the autograph to March of '33) and died at age 50 in 1950. Cool card to hold while contemplating Burch's interesting career.
