Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2013
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/18/2013
An intriguing and interesting investment opportunity are these three dozen stock certificates, all signed by Hockey Hall of Fame "builder" Sir Montagu Allan. Born in 1860 in Montreal, Sir Montagu Allan was the man who in 1908 donated the "Allan Cup" for senior amateur competition in Canada. He was a sportsman and financier and because the Stanley Cup had changed from an amateur to a professional trophy, William Northey of Montreal prevailed upon Sir Montagu to donate the trophy. The certificates are for varying amounts of shares in the Acadia Coal Company, chartered by the province of Nova Scotia, and range from 1900 to 1921. Each is signed "H. Montagu Allen" by Acadia's president, with a punch hole at times affecting the signature. The back of each includes interesting reading and signatures, along with, at times, postage stamps. Measuring approximately 7" to 7-1/2" by 10-1/2", they feature the signature of a HOFer, (elected 1945), who died in 1951. [red] Addendum; There is a total of 51 Montagu Allan autographs, 36 are located on the front of the stock shares and an additional 15 is also found on the back of the stock shares.[/red]
