Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2013

The mouths of those who pursue the autographs of deceased Hall-of-Famers are no doubt watering at the sight of this rarity, a Didier Pitre signature! And not a cut signature, but penciled to a (trimmed) sepia-tone picture issued by "La Patrie" in 1927, a few years after the end of his big-time career. The first player signed by Jack Laviolette when the latter formed the Canadiens in 1909, Pitre became the idol of French-Canadian hockey followers, possessing tremendous speed for a big man, tipping the scales at close to 200 pounds which he packed into a hard, heavy shot. Originally a defenceman, Pitre later played right wing on a line with Laviolette and Newsy Lalonde and helped the Habs to their first Stanley Cup in 1915-16. He averaged better than a goal a game in the NHA, scoring 30 in 20 games in 1914-15 and 24 in 24 games during the 1915-16 championship season. Mirroring the only other known Pitre autograph, this treasure will be a tremendous acquisition.
