Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2013
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/18/2013
Long before the Detroit Red Wings (and most of the other NHL teams) began making annual yearbooks for the general public, a press guide was produced in very limited numbers prior to each season as a resource for reporters, broadcasters and team officials. Offered here is among the earliest of those, released prior to the start of the Red Wings' 1947-48 season. Simply created with blank covers and 40 mimeographed 8 1/2" x 11" pages, its contents provide a fascinating look at a team that was about to dominate the League for the next eight seasons, finishing 1st overall seven times and winning four Stanley Cups. It includes mostly full page write-ups and statistics for every Detroit player, including emerging stars (and future Hall of Famers) Ted Lindsay, Sid Abel, Bill Quakenbush, Sid Abel, Harry Lumley, 20 year old rookie Red Kelly, and, starting his second season, 19 year old Gordon Howe - "Still the baby of the squad..." (it notes that away from the ice Gordie is a "typical teen age youngster" who enjoys swing music and malted milks). This rare guide is in solid EX condition with light overall wear.
