Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2013

Here's a very rare item - a complete home program from the final season of the short-lived Hamilton Tigers, sold for ten cents to fans attending the game against the Montreal Maroons on December 20, 1924 (a 3-1 Hamilton win). Making it doubly unique, this was just the 7th NHL game for the first-year Maroons - so new that they are listed in the program as the "Wanderers", a great Montreal team of the past that was forced to disband four games into the NHL's inaugural season of 1917-18 when its rink burnt down. Legend has it that the Maroon's owners intended to resurrect the Wanderers name for their team, but were unable to obtain the rights to it, and so chose "Maroons", based on their jersey colors. The Hamilton Tigers were members of the fledgling National Hockey League for five years, joining the League in 1920-21 after their players were bought from the Quebec Bulldogs, a founding member of the NHL who had been forced to disband due to economic woes. In their first four seasons, in what was then just a four team League, the Tigers finished dead last; but in 1924-25, led by Hart Trophy winner Billy Burch, they climbed all the way to first place with a 19-10-1 record. However, demands for extra playoff money ($200 each) by the Hamilton players resulted in suspension of the team, and the end of their season. The following year the franchise would be transferred to New York to become that city's first NHL team - the Americans. This fascinating link to a very early period of transition for the League is in solid VG/EX condition, with light overall wear and some cover creasing.
