Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2013
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/18/2013
While we have handled many vintage hockey scrapbooks over the years, it is safe to say we have never seen one as early, or significant, as this offering, which covers the season in which the storied Montreal Canadiens franchise captured their very first Stanley Cup, nearly 100 years ago. 58 pages of clippings from the Montreal Herald newspaper document in chronological order (and entirely in English) the entire 1915-16 National Hockey Association season from January 1st (four games in) through to season's end and the full five game Stanley Cup series between the Canadiens and the Portland Rosebuds, champions of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA); plus post-Series exhibition games played immediately afterwards by the two teams in New York and Boston. Page after page of articles, game summaries and box scores report the events of this extraordinary season of hockey, two years before the birth of the NHL. The Canadiens would capture their first League championship (after floundering through five of their first six seasons), Newsy Lalonde would win the scoring title (just ahead of Joe Malone and Cy Denneny), Clint Benedict of the Ottawa Senators would edge out Montreal's George Vezina as top goaltender, and the Rosebuds would be the first US based team to play for the Stanley Cup. Very neatly assembled, and in superb EX/NM condition with gorgeous antique covers, creamy pages and no marks or tears; this Hall of Fame worthy scrapbook may be the only detailed record in existence of this supremely historic season.
