Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2013
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/18/2013
Truly amazing piece of early hockey history is an 1889 Montreal Amateur Athletic Association Montreal Hockey Club gold pocket watch commemorating the team's reign as Amateur Hockey Association of Canada champions. The MAAA hockey team held the AHAC title in 1888, '89 and '90 and would go on to become the first winners of the Stanley Cup in 1893. There is a gold value alone of about $1,200 in this historic hockey timepiece that has the MAAA's legendary winged wheel logo engraved on the front cover. Elegantly engraved on the back side of the watch, inside the back cover, are the words, "Presented to A.E. MacNaughton by the Citizens of Montreal, October 19th, 1889". The inside of the back cover is stamped, "M. W. C. Co" along with "14K" and the number "7498".
Our research shows that A.E. MacNaughton is listed as a member of the league council representing the Montreal Hockey Club for league business. Archie MacNaughton played with the Montreal Hockey Club from 1888-90 and finished top scoring leader in 1889 and 1890, though we are unable to determine whether they are different people or in fact one and the same. There is a good possibility this watch was gifted for the MAAA's 1989 Canadian championship as we have seen and sold in the past similar championship / Stanley Cup watches that team members received as mementoes of their titles. The watch, which no longer works, has "A.W. Co. Waltham" printed on its now-open and exposed white face which is missing its original glass. With scratches on the covers from its obvious proud wear and display, and maintenance notations etched inside the rear cover, this magnificent championship timepiece predates the MAAA's first Stanley Cup title.
