Fantastic stash of 1950s Bruins publications features five copies of the Boston Bruins Hockey Bulletin newsletter and 90 Bruins program inserts, including 85 from Boston Garden from 1956-59. There are three 16-pgae Montreal Forum inserts for late 1950s Bruins vs. Canadiens games with two from the 1957 Stanley Cup finals, including one from the Habs’ Cup-clinching 5-1 win in Game 5 on April 16. A Maple Leaf Gardens 12-page program insert from the fourth game of Boston’s semi-final against Toronto on March 29, 1949 features Brimsek, Schmidt and Dumart in Boston’s lineup in the centerfold. Broda, Watson, Bentley, Kennedy and Barilko are listed in the lineup of the reigning Cup champions, who won 3-1 to take a 3-1 series lead and begin a run of six straight wins that made the Maple Leafs the first team to win three straight Cups. A Madison Square Garden eight-page program insert for the Bruins’ January 4, 1958 game against the Rangers has some pen notations on the rosters cover page. Also included is a 1972-73 New York Rangers training camp roster sheet and a 1959 Central Maine Youth Center program.
There are five copies of the 1950s Boston Bruins Hockey Bulletin, including two of the July 3, 1952 first edition, Vo. 1 – No. 1 with the famous picture of black-eyed Sugar Jim Henry shaking hands with Montreal’s bloodied and bandaged Maurice “Rocket” Richard. Also included are an issue of Vol. 2 – No. 2 (August 15, 1953) with a mailing address on the cover and two copies of Vol. 3 – No. 2 with Terry Sawchuk pictured in his Bruins uniform.
The Boston Garden program inserts include 84 for Bruins games covering most of their home games for a three season span from 1956-57 through 1958-59, with two duplicates and the rest all single games. These four-page inserts from the middle of Boston Garden programs, which begin with Herby Ralby’s Ice Chips column, are nicely preserved overall, some with handling and limited notations in the lineup centerfold.
