Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2013

As the 1970s reached their midpoint, Montreal Canadiens captain Henri Richard passed on the torch of his leadership duties to fellow HOFer Yvan Cournoyer. Nicknamed "The Roadrunner" due to his small size and blazing speed, which he credited to longer blades on his skates, Yvan transitioned from his role as the Habs' most lethal scorer to one of the team's greatest leaders. Cournoyer won 10 Stanley Cups, the last four as team captain, and he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982. Yvan wore this Canadiens uniform, his first captain's jersey, as an alternate captain's jersey in 1973-74 before he had the captain's C sewn on it for the 1974-75 season, the last of the tie-neck style durene in Montreal. The alternate's A was removed from where the captain's "C" now sits up on the left breast above that classic tackle-twill "CH" crest. An action shot of the Roadrunner from the 1973-74 season displays the black marks on the lower white band on the left front of this classic Habs game-worn jersey, with another photo match offered by the placement of the sewn-on CH crest, with a line of white striping showing in the upper opening in the middle of the H. Various reddish-brown stains inside the collar and back of the neck, which has Wilson tagging with size "48" noted in vintage ballpoint ink. Yvan's now-retired number "12" on the back and both sleeves are sewn-on double twill. A garter-style fight strap remains in the tail. Great game wear shows in loads and loads of terrific team repairs. We count some 10 on the left arm and about the same number on the right sleeve, with at least a dozen more on the front to go along with black marks all over the front tail with more scuffs and marks on the sleeves. A truly historic Canadiens captain's jersey, photo-matched to game use by the Roadrunner!
