Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2013

A captivating early Jacques Plante autograph, penned when he was just 19 years old, along with his goalie stick and an intriguing story are offered here, with Jacques' "Drolet" teammates (15) also signing the lumber, a sturdy Alexandria Wood Products Ltd. production. The big bold Plante signature appears second-from-the-top on one side of the paddle and below where "1947-48 Serie Independante" was inscribed. Jacques played his first of two seasons with the Quebec Citadels junior team in 1947-48 and not surprisingly was solicited by others, including this Drolet team, likely an intermediate/senior/commercial outfit. We don't recognize any of the other players' names, although familiar French surnames are present, with Bill Byrne listed as coach. Originally obtained from Jacques Plante's goddaughter, the stick is solid with time cracks in the blade and strips of black and white tape having become unravelled. Surely a one-of-a-kind, the fantastic find will be accompanied by an LOA.
