Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2013
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/18/2013
The riveting image of hockey immortal Howie Morenz and his coveted autograph join forces here to produce an exceptional display, the likes of which does not often surface. An accompanying handwritten one-page letter includes revealing provenance, reading in part: "My Dad received the picture from Howie when the Canadiens came to play in Detroit. When my dad passed away, it was handed down to me. Sincerely, Mr. (?) Morenz." We're not sure about what initial precedes "Morenz", but can tell you that the picture, on paper stock, measures 7-1/4" by 9" and has been mounted, (not glued), to blue felt which is affixed to red felt measuring 11" by 14". Multiple light creases and edge tears are to mention, along with a stain in the lower left portion that just touches the "H" of Howie. Black fountain pen autograph is a bold beauty, with again, the picture able to be removed if one so desires. A postage stamp and short write-up on "The Mitchell Meteor" are also incorporated into the delectable display. A couple of newspaper clippings from the aforementioned "Mr. Morenz," including one from just after Howie's untimely death, will also accompany this extraordinary find.
