Historical Hockey Memorabilia Winter 2012

Cool find is this lot of five rare early 1960s Rangers and Canadiens ceramic tiles. Three chip-free Habs 6x6x tiles feature Ralph Backstrom, Bobby Rousseau and Jean Gauthier. The Rangers are represented by a really nice example of a coach Muzz Patrick tile. A Dave Balon tile has a crack that runs somewhat diagonally through the right side from the top to the bottom, with cracks in the cork backing along the same seam. The surface of these tiles display minor scratches, none of which result in any noteworthy paint loss, including the Balon tile. "H.M. Cowan" on each tile is likely the artist's name and "Screenarts Products Ltd., Made in Canada" is stamped on the top of the cork backing on the reverse. These tiles were never sold to the public, likely because of licensing problems, making them very desirable pieces whenever they surface.
