Al Kaline’s #6 Detroit Tigers jersey is an authentic flannel beauty, circa the 1968 World Series championship season, which the Hall of Fame outfielder gifted directly to a member of our consignor’s family. This majestic Kaline uniform with the Tigers’ classic Old English “D” on the left breast and Al’s now-retired number “6” on the back, both sewn-on in navy blue felt. It has the proper Wilson size 42 tagging on the left tail, which is consistent with what the great right fielder wore during that era. Kaline, who retired at the end of the 1974 season with 3,007 hits to his credit, gave this jersey to Bobby Prentice, a former minor league third baseman in the Indians’ system who signed Canadian talent such as John Hiller, Mike Kilkenny and George Korince as a scout for Detroit. Prentice also served as a spring training infield instructor for the Tigers. Kaline made 22 appearances at first base in 1968, a position he would field occasionally through the end of his career. This magnificent Tigers #6 flannel jersey does not have the year tag that is typically attached to the size label on the tail, which certainly supports the story that it was gifted to Prentice as a token of appreciation at the end of spring training. Prentice, who subsequently gave this jersey to his brother, joined the expansion Toronto Blue Jays in 1977 and remained the team’s director of Canadian scouting until his death in 1995. This exquisite Al Kaline #6 Detroit Tigers flannel jersey will come with a letter of authenticity signed by Bobby Prentice’s brother confirming its provenance.
