Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2011
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/21/2011
This huge lot of early 20th century speed skating medals represents the competitive haul of Canada’s Lot Roe, a world-class competitor from Toronto. Three gorgeous real gold medals are featured among this impressive grouping of vintage medals, most of which date from the latter part of the first decade of the 1900s through the dawn of World War I. A pair of gold medals, each weighing 20 grams, are from the 1908 WSA championship as noted on the face along with “Elysium Ice Rink, Cleveland, Ohio”, with “1-Mile Indoor National Championship” engraved on one, and “2-Mile … “ on the other. (The gold skate on the 1-mile gold medal has become detached.) A third gold medal with a real diamond and a red precious stone and “Champion” on the face is for the 220-yard race at the 1912 Saranac Amateur Skating Association. “Lot Roe” is engraved on the reverse of this 10K gold medal which weighs approximately 20 grams and comes with its original red-and-white ribbon. Five medals, three silvers and two bronzes, from 1914 bear the International Amateur Skating Championship logo on the face. More medals are included from competitions at Cleveland’s Elysium. Other early arenas featured include a sterling silver 1909 medal from a 1-mile race in Pittsburgh, one of five medals from the old Duquesne Gardens, and a 1911 bronze is from New York’s St. Nicholas Rink. These early 20th century speed skating medals, most of which have their original ribbons attached, are fascinating to pore over though too numerous to detail here. Period newspaper articles will accompany this lot. Please see the website description for more photos and feel free to contact us for more information.
