Montreal Canadiens defenseman Peter Popovic played for Sweden during the 1996 World Cup of Hockey. Popovic wore this #36 Tre Kronor jersey with size 58 tagging for each of the three games he played. Wear shows in numerous black marks and slashes on and around the numbers on the left sleeve and a few more marks lower on the same sleeve. Comes with an NHLPA letter of authenticity. Always among the hockey world’s international elite, Team Sweden came oh-so-close to making it to the final of the 1996 World Cup of Hockey. With Nicklas Lidstrom and veteran captain Calle Johansson manning the blue line and Peter Forsberg and Mats Sundin leading the way on offense, Sweden dominated the European pool. Traveling to Prague for a 3-0 win over the Czech Republic on August 29th between victories over Germany and Finland in Stockholm, the Swedes outscored their opponents by a combined score of 14-3 during the round-robin phase. Facing Canada in the September 7th semi-final in Philadelphia, Sweden trailed 2-0 going into the third period. Tommy Albelin and Michael Nylander scored to send to overtime what would become the longest game in international hockey history. Johan Garpenlov nearly won it for the Swedes with a drive off the post before Theoren Fleury beat Tommy Salo with 12.5 seconds remaining in the second overtime, bringing about a sudden end to Sweden’s run as Canada moved on to the final. Offered here are both blue and yellow Sweden jerseys by Bauer from the inaugural edition of the World Cup of Hockey. Each of these classic international hockey jerseys has Bauer ProWear and size flag tags in the neck and a Nike inventory barcode heat-screened into the inner rear tail. The Bauer logo is embroidered on the left breast and all have the Swedish Ice Hockey Association patch sewn on the right breast and the 1996 World Cup of Hockey patch on the left shoulder. The Tre Kronor crests on the front, numbers on the sleeves and back, and surname letters on a nameplate stitched on the back are all sewn on in tackle twill. Sweden wore its blue uniforms for each of its four games during the tournament so all of the yellow jerseys are game-issued examples. Each jersey will come complete with a letter of authenticity from the NHLPA.
