Soviet Union goalie Vladimir Myshkin was suddenly thrust into a central role in the 1980 Team USA Olympic hockey “miracle” when he was called on to replace Hall-of-Famer Vladislav Tretiak. Myshkin’s 1980 Olympic silver medal is featured in these original Lake Placid items from his personal collection. Also included here are Myshkin’s Lake Placid 1980 Olympic diploma and his laminated Olympic athlete’s ID pass and official Lake Placid identity card, both of which bear Myshkin’s original signature. Soviet coach Viktor Tikhonov pulled Tretiak after the first because he allowed Mark Johnson’s first goal of the celebrated “Miracle” game in the dying seconds of the opening period, which allowed Americans to tie the game at 2. Myshkin stopped the only two shots he faced in the second and the Russians led 3-2 going into the third. Disaster struck for the Soviets in the final period as Johnson tied it with his second of the game before Mike Eruzione beat Myshkin to send the U.S. on to a stunning 4-3 upset. The “Miracle” win paved the way to gold for the Americans, who beat Finland in their final game of the tournament to deny the U.S.S.R. a fifth straight Olympic title. Offered here is the 1980 Lake Placid Olympic silver medal that was presented to Vladimir Myshkin. One side of this gorgeous silver medal has "Ice Hockey" engraved below "Lake Placid 1980" along with the official Lake Placid Olympic logo and pine cones and branches in relief. The other side of this 3.25-inch-diameter medal features "XIII Olympic Winter Games" and the Olympic rings with a hand holding a flaming torch aloft with a mountain range in the background. The edge is stamped "Tiffany & Co, Sterling Silver" and dated "1979". The medal has its original light blue-and-white ribbon, complete and intact, and it comes seated in its original Tiffany & Co. presentation case. The medal remains in quite nice condition overall with some small spots of silver color loss to note, mainly along the edge as well as on it. Regardless of these flaws, this historic 1980 Olympic silver medal is complete and intact, just as it was presented to Myshkin in Lake Placid along with his official Olympic medal diploma, which is also included. Signed by IOC president Lord Killanin, this remarkable and rarely-seen Olympic document has bluish-tint stains from the inside of the cover. The diploma’s 14 1/2” x 11 1/2" cover exhibits handling with some stains on the less-than-perfect front cover which features the 1980 Lake Placid Olympic logo in gold. Vladimir Myshkin’s signed letter of authenticity will accompany the items from this historic lot featuring his 1980 Olympic silver medal.
