Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2011

The Winged Wheel rides high with pride on the cover of this mid-1960s Tiffany & Co sterling silver cigarette case. An enamel-painted Detroit Red Wings raised logo with “N.H.L. Champions 1964-65” engraved below it is displayed on the cover of this magnificent piece of hockey history, which was likely presented to Marguerite Norris, the daughter of Norris clan patriarch Bruce Sr., who served as team president following her father’s death from 1952-55. The first female executive in league history, Norris led the Red Wings to three straight regular season titles during her brief tenure and became the first woman to have her name inscribed on the Stanley Cup when Detroit won back-to-back championships in 1954 and ’55. The Red Wing offered their former president this superb keepsake after they beat out Montreal to claim the Prince of Wales Trophy in 1964-65. “Tiffany & Co” is stamped in tiny letters on the inside lower edge of this cigarette case with a gilded interior. “Sterling” and assay mark are stamped on the gold-colored cigarette holder. Originally obtained from a member of the Norris family, this is a fantastic piece of Red Wings history whose appeal will surely extend way beyond Motown alone!
